My visit to the Garden of the Sleeping Giant, in Sabeto, Fiji.

I had heard about the Garden of the Sleeping Giant in Sabeto, Fiji but never had the opportunity to visit. However, during a recent trip to Fiji I had the chance to visit this beautiful and tranquil orchid garden, set in the valleys of Sabeto. This garden was founded by Raymond Burr in 1977 to house his own orchids. It is now one of the tourist attractions, displaying Fiji's largest collection of orchids. You may explore on your own, or with Garden guides across lily ponds and through a cool tropical jungle. Located on Wailoko road, 6.5 kilometers (four miles) north of Nadi Airport, the Garden is an easy drive from any hotel in the Nadi area. Aleternatively, you can join a regularly scheduled tour visiting the Garden, or you can take a taxi - I'm sure the driver would only be too happy to wait or return to pick you up.

It is a world all on its own. I found it very peaceful and calming, walking through this tropical splendour. In typical Fiji hospitality, complimentary refreshing ice-cold tropical fruit drinks are served on arrival. Admission fees: adults - $FD14.50, children 6-15 years $FD7.50, families $FD36.50 (parents and minor children). The Garden is open through Monday to Saturday 9am-5pm. On Sundays half-a-day.
